Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Tougher penalties for road rage driving

The law defines road rage as intentionally aggressive or threatening behavior toward others on public roads. If a misdemeanor stems from road rage, the court adds at least a $750 fine and can suspend your license up to 1 year. If a felony stems from road rage, you face 2–15 extra years in prison, at least a $1,000 fine, and license suspension up to 5 years or revocation up to 2 years. Prosecutors must give early notice, and a judge or jury must find road rage beyond a reasonable doubt. The enhancement is not a separate crime, and added prison time runs after the base sentence.

Road rage education fund for drivers

Fines from road‑rage cases go into a new Road Rage and Safe Driving Education Fund at the Transportation Department. The department uses the money for public awareness and safer‑driving campaigns. The fund is exempt from the usual 15% indirect cost transfer, so more dollars stay for safety work.
