Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Glocester property tax breaks for seniors, disabled

Glocester owner‑occupants age 65+ or permanently disabled can get up to $2,070 off property taxes. This base amount increases each year with inflation (CPI‑U) using a non‑compounded method that applies each year’s change to the original $2,070. Owners age 80+ can get an extra exemption up to $1,000; the town sets the exact amount and any required time you must have owned and lived in the home. For people who first qualify after a date the town sets, there is no income limit for these exemptions. You must own and live in the home in Glocester.

Income-tested exemption for prior recipients

Glocester can keep a variable, income‑tested exemption for owner‑occupants who already had an exemption before a local cutoff date. You qualify if your combined adjusted gross taxable household income is under the town’s limit; the town may exclude Social Security from that income. The town fixes the rate and level as of a set date and checks your income each year. The income limit may rise yearly by the CPI‑U or a regional CPI the town names.

Minimum yearly tax even with exemption

Glocester can set a minimum yearly property tax for anyone getting these exemptions. Even with an exemption, you must pay at least that amount. The town sets the dollar amount in its ordinance.

Glocester rules and one-per-home cap

The town sets who qualifies, what proof you need, and filing deadlines. You must show age, ownership, Glocester residency, and disability proof when required; income cases need yearly documents. When a home has co‑owners, the exemption is split, and only one exemption is allowed per property. These exemptions add to any other exemptions you get. Glocester’s local rules control here, even over the general state rule.
