resolution requesting that the general assembly enact the following provision relating to the annual 3financial town meeting: 4Provided that the appropriations recommended by the Town Council have been 5 made no later than the fourth Thursday in April immediately preceding the town meeting 6 to be held on the first Tuesday in June, no motion which increases or reduces an 7 appropriation recommended by the town council by $10,000.00 or more, shall be in order 8 at such meeting unless notice of intention to make such motion has been presented to the 9 town treasurer with the signatures of not less than ten (10) qualified electors of the town 10 no later than the May 15 immediately preceding said such meeting.

Scituate: notice for big spending motions

The law sets a notice rule for Scituate’s annual financial town meeting when the Town Council files its recommended appropriations by the fourth Thursday in April. A motion to raise or cut a council‑recommended appropriation by $10,000 or more is not in order unless a notice of intention, signed by at least 10 qualified electors, is filed with the town treasurer by May 15 and printed in the publication required under § 44-35-6. If valid notice is given, smaller amendments may be considered at the meeting. These changes take effect only if Scituate voters approve them at the November 3, 2026 election.
