Charlestown gains a homeowner tax-break option

Beginning December 31, 2025, Charlestown’s town council can grant a yearly property-tax exemption of up to 10% of assessed value. The council can also choose no exemption. Eligible properties include residential-only properties with a dwelling containing fewer than five units, plus mixed residential-commercial properties. For mixed-use parcels, the exemption percentage equals the council’s chosen percentage multiplied by the residential share of parcel square footage. The council must set eligibility rules by resolution or ordinance. It may approve a partial-year exemption when ownership passes from someone not entitled to the exemption to someone who is.
