3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Stronger renewal rules and insurer fines

The Insurance Commissioner can set statewide rules for cancelling and renewing personal auto, homeowners, and residential fire policies, including reasons for nonrenewal. Breaking the notice rules is a deceptive trade practice. Each violation can be fined up to $1,000.

Advance notice when auto/home coverage drops

Insurers must warn you at least 30 days before renewal if they cut coverage or raise a deductible you did not ask for. The notice must be titled “NOTICE OF REDUCTION IN COVERAGE” and list each change. It can be sent by mail or email and must be easy to spot. This applies to personal auto liability and property damage, homeowners, and residential fire policies for non‑business use. The Commissioner also sets detailed notice rules. The law shields the state and insurers from liability for statements made in these notices.

Two months’ notice for big homeowner hikes

Beginning September 1, 2026, your insurer must give you two months’ notice before your homeowner renewal premium rises by more than 20%. If the insurer will not renew your homeowner policy, it must also give at least two months’ notice before it ends. This gives you time to shop or line up other coverage.
