New Real Access charity plate option

The DMV offers a Real Access Motivates Progress specialty license plate. It uses your current registration number and replaces your regular plates. You must return your old plates and carry your registration certificate in the car. The nonprofit designs the plate with the DMV, and the State Police must approve it; the plate is the same size as regular plates. Plates are made only after a minimum prepaid order is met under state rules, and the nonprofit handles the first order and prepayment.

Fees and rules for Real Access plates

If you get the plate, you pay a $40 surcharge on top of regular registration. $20 goes to the state. $20 is sent each year to Real Access Motivates Progress to support accessibility work. Each renewal adds a $10 surcharge that goes to the nonprofit. There are no refunds if you cancel early. The nonprofit must use Rhode Island plate funds for Rhode Island charities and file an annual accounting before it gets money.
