Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Disabled veterans pay no DMV fees

Eligible disabled veterans do not pay the annual registration fee or the license fee to operate that vehicle. You must have an honorable discharge and either VA proof of a 100% service‑connected disability, be rated individually unemployable, have lost or lost the use of a limb, or have received a VA vehicle grant. The exemption can also cover a spouse when the Disabled Veteran plates are legally transferred. The law takes effect upon passage.

Disabled Veteran plates and spouse rights

The DMV issues 'Disabled Veteran' plates to eligible veterans for cars and small commercial vehicles up to 12,000 lbs. If the veteran cannot drive, the plates can transfer to the spouse while the veteran is alive. After the initial plate holder dies, the surviving spouse can keep the plates for life unless they remarry. You must show VA certification or other proof, and only one set of plates is allowed. The law takes effect upon passage.
