Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Property tax interest relief for long-time owners

Your city or town can waive interest on one quarter of an overdue property tax bill. The waiver is only for interest and is capped at $500. Your town must first pass an ordinance. You must own and use the home or commercial property for the past five years. You must have paid that town’s taxes on time for those five years and show proof. You must send a written, signed, and dated request. The tax bill must be less than two years old when you ask. If you meet these rules and your town adopted the ordinance, the waiver must be granted. The town can also let you pay the rest in quarterly payments.

10-day appeal after waiver denial

The tax collector must issue a written decision and notify the city or town council. If your request is denied, you still must pay the interest. You can file a claim with the council for reimbursement within 10 days of the decision.
