Police must file electronic sexual assault reports

When police find probable cause in a sexual assault or child molestation case, they must complete a reporting form. Departments send the form and the police narrative electronically at the end of each month. For open cases or unserved warrants, they submit as soon as possible, and no later than the end of that calendar year. The courts’ domestic violence training and monitoring unit sets the form and how to send it. The form lists names, relationships, sex, birth dates, date and time, whether children were involved or present, type and extent of abuse, weapons, prior court orders, language barriers, and other needed facts. If the case ends in acquittal, dismissal, or other exoneration, the unit removes the report from its records.
