If a property gets water from the district, the owner must pay district water rates. Unpaid water bills become a lien on the property, like a real-estate tax lien, when service is ordered in writing by the owner. For nonpayment, the district can enter the property and shut off water until all charges and penalties are paid. The district applies water payments first to any unpaid district taxes.
The law expands the North Tiverton Fire District to cover most of Tiverton, except the area the law excludes. Properties in the new area fall under district rules and services. Owners and renters there can receive fire protection and water service. They also may owe district taxes, rates, or assessments set by the district.
To vote in North Tiverton Fire District matters, you must be eligible to vote at a Tiverton financial town meeting, live in the district, and own property there that gets district water or abuts a street with an active district water main. The annual meeting is the first Tuesday in June. The clerk must call a special meeting when the board orders it or when at least 75 electors apply in writing, and must post notices in 10 places and publish them at least 7 days before. No vote (except adjournment or officer elections) can occur unless at least 30 electors are present. Beginning after the 2026 annual meeting, if electors approve, the number of tax assessors drops to four by attrition. The district also holds standard corporate powers, like having a seal and suing or being sued.
