Free tuition for veterans' children
Beginning May 15, 2026, a child of a qualifying wartime veteran can attend a South Carolina state college, university, or technical college without paying tuition. You must apply to and be approved by the South Carolina Department of Veterans' Affairs before using this benefit. You must be 26 or younger, meet Chapter 112 residency rules, and be pursuing an undergraduate degree. The veteran parent must have served honorably during a war period under federal law (38 U.S.C. §101) and meet South Carolina residency rules. Residency is met if, for example, the veteran lived in South Carolina at entry and during service, has lived in South Carolina for at least one year and still does, lived here for one year before death, or the child has lived in South Carolina since birth. The veteran must also have a qualifying status such as killed in action, died in service or from service-related causes, prisoner of war, permanently and totally disabled by the VA, Medal of Honor or Purple Heart recipient, missing in action, or be a deceased veteran who otherwise qualified. Your school must find your work and conduct satisfactory.
