Itemized medical bills for patients
The law is in effect. Beginning January 1, 2027, hospitals and other licensed facilities must give you an itemized bill when they ask you to pay after care. They must provide it electronically and give you a paper copy if you ask. They must clearly tell you it is available and let you choose electronic or paper. You can say no at first, but you can ask for the itemized bill later at any time. The bill must use plain language, show the services and supplies with related charges, the amount the facility says you owe, and, if they billed an insurer, your share based on the insurer’s remittance notice. Facilities may send the bill through a patient portal. State licensing agencies treat violations like licensing breaches and can discipline the facility.
