New makeup of St. John's fire commission
Beginning May 19, 2026, the St. John's Fire Commission has nine members. Four must live on Johns Island, one on Seabrook Island, one on Wadmalaw Island, and three on Kiawah Island. The Governor appoints them after a majority of the county legislative delegation recommends them. Members serve four-year terms that end December 31. The commission elects a chair and a secretary. Vacancies are filled the same way for the rest of the term.
Open records and purchasing for fire district
Beginning May 19, 2026, the commission must use a purchasing code that follows Section 11-35-5320. All of its records are public under Section 30-4-30. The act also repeals Section 2 of Act 727 of 1978, an old rule about an extra appointment.
