Insurance and separate sites for kart rentals
Kart rental businesses must carry at least $1,000,000 in liability insurance per incident for injuries or property damage. Rental karts cannot operate in the same establishment as other amusement devices. A kart rental venue must have its own separate entrance and exit and must charge a separate fee for kart use.
Age limits and safety rules for rental karts
You can drive a rental kart only if you are 18 or older, or 15–17 with a valid driver’s license or permit. If a driver is under 18, the kart must have an occupant restraint and a rollover protection system. Sites must post this sign: "Rental karts are not amusement devices regulated by the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. Rental karts may not reach speeds in excess of fifty miles per hour. Drive at your own risk." The law also defines a “rental kart” as an open‑wheel racing vehicle limited to 50 mph, and says it is different from a “concession go‑kart,” which is a track‑bound ride with at most two people and no cargo space.
