Public school districts with more than 15,000 students can hire armed security or staff with arrest authority. The district must be licensed as a proprietary security business and follow state police (SLED) standards. The board or charter authorizer must name the superintendent as the license applicant, and SLED approves only if staff have the right training and background. These private officers do not replace school resource officers and cannot serve in SRO advisor or teacher roles. School district employees doing this security work must follow Chapter 18 licensing and registration rules.
SLED sets training for initial and renewal registration of school security officers. Districts cannot use anyone under 21 as a school security officer. Districts must run a full-time security and emergency management division and have a written joint-training agreement with local police. School district security officers must be recertified every two years.
