South Carolina outlaws mail theft
South Carolina now treats mail theft as a crime, effective May 15, 2026. It covers USPS, private carriers, and packages at your mailbox or door. Taking, hiding, destroying, or buying stolen mail, or getting it by fraud, is illegal. Having fake or unauthorized mailbox keys or breaking into a mailbox to steal mail, or conspiring to do these acts, is also illegal. A first offense is a Class A misdemeanor (up to $5,000 fine and 3 years in jail); later offenses are a Class E felony (up to $10,000 fine and 10 years), and courts must order victims to be paid back.
