School crossing guards can direct traffic
Beginning May 18, 2026, trained crossing personnel can direct and control traffic on public roads near schools to ease drop-off and pickup congestion. They must wear high-visibility clothing or equipment that drivers can clearly see. People who direct traffic must receive traffic-safety training. The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy trains certified law officers so they can teach school designees. The school district supervisor must provide the required visibility gear.
