South Dakota's Department of Public Safety sets and publishes a maximum daily meal allowance, effective October 1 each year. It cannot exceed the current U.S. General Services Administration per diem rate for South Dakota. The allowance covers authorized wildland fire employees and fire suppression forces working on uncontrolled fires in the Black Hills Forest Fire Protection District. Outside the district, it applies only when the Governor declares an emergency under § 34-48A-5 or § 41-20A-8. Meals must be ordered and distributed in a department-approved way.
