South Dakota school boards can require students with aggressive or violent behavior to learn in an alternative setting. The behavior must disrupt school or affect the health or safety of the school or its program. Placement cannot limit enrollment options under state law or conflict with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or Section 504. Each year, boards must report students assigned during the school year to the state education department by the second Friday of June, using its form. The department can share report information only after removing identifying details and combining it with data from all other districts.
