Livestock owners face $1.65 inspection fee cap

South Dakota's board can set livestock ownership inspection fees up to $1.65 per animal, including outside the inspection area. The board sets actual fees by rule; the law does not automatically charge the maximum. Brand registration, application, and transfer fees each have a $50 cap; duplicate certificates have a $20 cap. Brand renewal fees are capped at $18 per year or $90 for each five-year ownership period. Inspector mileage fees cannot exceed the state's legally set mileage rate. The board also sets rules for brand symbols, placement, registration, transfers, renewals, and ownership inspection, enforcement, and livestock transportation.
