Schools add prenatal lessons with material limits

South Dakota school districts must use state-recommended resources about development before birth when providing health or science curricula. The Board of Education Standards must recommend age-appropriate, research-based resources. Lessons must include a high-definition ultrasound video showing the brain, heart, and other major organs at different stages. They must also include a high-quality computer-generated rendering or high-definition ultrasound video showing development from fertilization through birth. This must highlight key moments in cell growth and organ development. Each video or rendering shown must last at least three minutes. Schools cannot use lesson materials produced or provided by entities that perform or promote abortions. This ban also covers entities that contract, subcontract, affiliate, or regularly make referrals to entities that perform or promote abortions.
