Equipment grants for volunteer fire departments
The law provides $5 million from South Dakota’s general fund to the Department of Public Safety for firefighter protective equipment grants. Eligible South Dakota fire departments must have at least 70% of their firefighters serving as volunteers. The equipment must be worn or used by firefighters on duty. The department processes completed applications in chronological order, giving priority to departments with the greatest equipment need for firefighter safety. Funds not lawfully spent or committed by June 30, 2030, revert under state law. The law took effect immediately upon passage and approval.
