Campaign treasurers face updated financial reporting rules

Beginning January 1, 2027, covered treasurers must file pre-primary, pre-general, and annual year-end statements with South Dakota’s secretary of state. This covers candidates and campaign committees for statewide offices, and for legislative or county offices with a recognized political party. It also covers statewide political action committees, statewide political parties, county political parties and auxiliary organizations, and statewide ballot question committees. Supplemental reports under the state’s supplemental reporting law and amendments to earlier statements are also required when applicable. A violation is a Class 2 misdemeanor; a later offense within the same calendar year is a Class 1 misdemeanor.

New closing deadlines for political committees

Beginning January 1, 2027, covered committee treasurers may submit a termination statement to South Dakota’s secretary of state at any time. A party that loses qualified-party status must file one by 5 p.m. Central Time on the last Friday in January following the calendar year when it lost that status. A statewide ballot question committee that lists no activity on its next required report has until the next reporting period to report activity. If it still has no activity to report, it must file a termination statement by that reporting period’s deadline.
