Fewer building permits for homeowners' exterior repairs
Counties, cities, and townships cannot require building permits for repairs or substantially similar replacements of the exterior parts listed below. This exemption applies only to detached, single-family homes occupied by their owners. Covered parts include same-size doors and windows, downspouts, fascia, fence panels or posts, gutters, nonstructural siding, and soffits. Local governments may still require permits for work on designated historic property. Homeowners must still follow other applicable building codes and ordinances.
