Voters get confirmation mail with response deadlines

Beginning December 1, 2026, South Dakota county auditors must send confirmation letters or postcards after certain mail comes back undeliverable. This applies to registration acknowledgement notices and address verification requests. The confirmation lists the voter's information on file and warns that registration may be canceled without a reply. Voters must sign and return it if correct, or send corrected information. After an undeliverable acknowledgement notice, voters must reply within 30 days of the confirmation's postmark. After an undeliverable address verification request, voters must reply by the primary election's voter registration deadline. Missing the deadline or having the confirmation returned undeliverable moves the registration to inactive status. A returned card showing a move to another county or state authorizes cancellation of the registration.
