City sets mayor and council pay

Athens sets the Mayor’s and Council members’ pay by city ordinance. Pay must follow limits in Tennessee law. A pay change cannot start during the term an official was elected to. Any change can only start with later terms.

Athens law needs two-thirds city approval

This act applies in Athens only if the City Council approves it by a two-thirds (2/3) vote. The presiding officer must proclaim the result and certify it to the Tennessee Secretary of State. Without city approval, the act has no effect in Athens.
