Large county hospitals get classification exemption

The law creates an exemption from one public benefit hospital classification rule. A hospital must have been established solely for a county government's benefit and have an estimated sales value over $500 million. The exemption applies only after a two-thirds vote of the legislative body in the county containing the hospital. The law took effect upon becoming law, but the exemption still requires county approval.

Local governments face hospital proceeds limits

The law sets rules for hospital transaction proceeds under the public benefit hospital classification test. Proceeds must be controlled separately from the buyer and related entities. Counties and cities can receive proceeds only to the extent needed to pay lawful obligations. The county-approved hospital exemption is an exception to this rule.
