New drone surveillance limits at public schools

Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee law adds privacy protections and criminal penalties for drone surveillance over public K–12 school grounds. Knowingly flying a drone there with intent to watch the grounds without school permission is a Class C misdemeanor. Permission must come from a school administrator, the director of schools, or the director’s designee. Officers acting within lawful duties and commercial operators authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration for that airspace are exempt. The public-property exception does not excuse this banned school surveillance. Related changes update offense references and classify covered offenses as Class C misdemeanors, except a separate Class E felony offense.
