More child care jobs for high schoolers

Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee high school students age 16 or older can work in child care centers. They must first complete at least two courses in a program of study in the education and training career cluster. They can work outside school hours, or during school hours through a work-based learning program. This permission overrides the minor-employment restrictions in Tennessee Code § 50-5-105. The department can issue rules to carry out this change through the state's administrative rulemaking process.
