Fewer licensing rules for minor electrical work

Beginning May 7, 2025, Utah provides licensing exemptions for qualifying minor electrical work. Work incidental to a mechanical or service installation is excluded from the electrical trade definition within these limits: wiring extends no more than 10 feet from an existing outlet or disconnect, and work stays within 120 volts and 20 amperes. The law also expands the construction-trades licensing exemption for minor electrical work involving on-premise sign installation, maintenance, or repair. That sign work must be incidental to a mechanical or service installation.
