Students gain access to nasal epinephrine

Utah public schools must let students carry and use epinephrine nasal spray themselves, without parent authorization or a provider statement. Separate rules allow schools to administer prescribed medicines, including nasal epinephrine, beginning May 7, 2025. Schools are not required to offer this service. For school administration during regular school hours, parents must submit a current, signed written request. A licensed provider must prescribe the medicine and document how to give it, the dose, schedule, and medical need. Participating schools must adopt policies after consulting state health officials and school nurses.

Broader pharmacy access to school rescue epinephrine

Beginning May 7, 2025, Utah’s standing-order pharmacy rules cover injectable rescue epinephrine, rather than only auto-injectors. Pharmacists and pharmacy interns can dispense it without a separate prescription to qualified adults or entities for School Health use. Dispensing must follow a standing order and guidelines covering administration, storage, side effects, and when to seek emergency care. State health officials must have an employee physician issue an order; local health department medical directors may also issue orders. Approved protocols must identify authorized dispensers, require yearly physician review, and require dispensing records. Issuing physicians have civil-liability protection for acts or omissions related to dispensing under these orders. Pharmacy participation is voluntary and does not itself create a duty to prescribe or dispense.
