3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.
Beginning May 7, 2025, residential customer-generation systems no longer face a 1,200-watt minimum; the maximum remains 25 kilowatts. Portable solar devices remain excluded from this category. Systems must be on or next to the customer's property and connected to utility distribution lines, operating alongside utility power. They must mainly offset the customer's electricity needs and be controlled by an inverter.
Beginning May 7, 2025, electrical corporations are not liable for damage or injury caused by portable solar devices. People harmed by these devices therefore have fewer ways to recover losses from those utilities.
Beginning May 7, 2025, qualifying portable solar devices skip specified utility connection rules and agreements, but receive no net-metering credits. Devices must produce no more than 1,200 watts, plug into a standard 120-volt AC outlet, and mainly offset customer electricity use. They must meet the latest National Electrical Code and have certification from UL or an equivalent nationally recognized testing lab. They must also stop feeding power into building wiring during a utility outage. Electrical corporations cannot require their approval, charge related fees, or demand controls or equipment beyond those built into the device.
