Beginning May 7, 2025, Utah expands eligibility for services paid by the Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Fund. Utah residents can qualify with a brain injury, spinal cord injury, or another neurological condition. A qualified professional must diagnose the condition, which must impair thinking or physical function. The person's need must be one the Fund can meet, such as evaluations, care coordination, or therapy through qualified clinics. The Fund cannot duplicate services or support already provided by another government or private agency.
Beginning May 7, 2025, the Fund's advisory committee can award qualified charitable clinics up to $100,000 total per year for research. Awards require money left after minimum allocations: 40% for education and related services, 25% for adult clinic help, and 10% for children's clinic help. Eligible clinics must be tax-exempt nonprofits, provide therapy, employ licensed therapy clinicians, and have five years of Utah post-acute rehabilitation experience. Projects must aim to improve outcomes for people with brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, or stroke, or children with neurological conditions or syndromes. Research needs approval from an institutional review board and must be designed to finish within 12 months. Clinics must report results and itemized spending and return unused grant money. They can collaborate with others but cannot pay another entity to conduct the project or cover unrelated administrative costs.
