Continued medication treatment in Utah jails

Beginning May 7, 2025, Utah county sheriffs must work with medical staff to continue medication-assisted treatment plans. This applies to people committed to jail who were active treatment clients before arrest and commitment. Plans can use prescribed, FDA-approved medicines, including buprenorphine, methadone, or naltrexone.

Substance use screening in Utah custody

Beginning May 7, 2025, Utah requires substance use screening within 30 days after commitment to county jail or state custody. Sheriffs and the Division of Correctional Health Services must use an evidence-based tool to screen for substance use disorders. Results guide treatment and program options. For state inmates whose screening finds a disorder, the division may offer medication-assisted treatment and substance use programs. It must coordinate with the housing facility; care must be appropriate and available, so access is not guaranteed.
