Political parties gain access to public venues

Beginning May 7, 2025, registered political parties gain access to covered public meeting facilities for party activities without discrimination. Counties, municipalities, school districts, and public colleges and universities must make meeting facilities in buildings they control available. Parties must request use before 5:00 p.m. at least 30 calendar days ahead, and the space must not already be booked. Facility operators may set terms for use. Charges cannot exceed actual costs for cleanup custodial services and services the party requests and the facility provides. Public entities must also avoid booking government-building events on announced party caucus evenings, to the extent possible. An exemption covers convention centers, sports arenas, and similar venues whose main business or function is hosting events. It applies only when a public entity other than a public college or university owns or operates the venue.
