Utility shutoff protection for crime victims

Beginning May 7, 2025, Utah adds utility protections when criminal pretrial protective orders remove alleged perpetrators from victims’ homes. Courts must bar the alleged perpetrator from ending utility service for at least 60 days after the order is issued. Courts may also order service restored when appropriate. The order does not automatically make the alleged perpetrator responsible for utility bills. Courts may decide who pays utility bills and any costs to restore service.
