Utah tax donation options face funding minimums

The hunger-relief donation option is subject to Utah’s tax-return removal rules. A covered donation option or covered combination must raise at least $30,000 yearly to avoid three consecutive years below the threshold. After three such years, the Tax Commission must remove the option and stop collection beginning two tax years later. The commission must report removals electronically to the Revenue and Taxation Interim Committee. Within 30 days of its decision, it must post a list on its website and the public legal notice website. The list must state the required removal, collection ban and effective tax year, and remain available until replaced.

Utah filers can donate toward hunger relief

The law creates the Statewide Hunger Relief Fund for voluntary donations through Utah individual income tax returns. Resident and nonresident filers can donate for tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2025. The Tax Commission must send all money collected since its last payment to the Utah Food Bank at least yearly. Donations support statewide hunger relief, while donors give up the amount they choose. The law took effect May 7, 2025, and appropriates no money.
