Free legal advice for Utah minors

Beginning May 7, 2025, Utah minors considering a nonjudicial adjustment get access to free legal advice through the Office of Indigent Defense Services. The office may hire or contract with lawyers, and the Utah Indigent Defense Commission must develop and oversee advice resources. Before a minor can decline an adjustment, the probation officer must explain the right to consult a lawyer and available resources. If the minor declines legal advice, the officer must record both the officer’s and minor’s acknowledgments before allowing the minor to decline the adjustment.
