Military moves unlock employer retirement contributions

Beginning July 1, 2025, eligible Utah Retirement Systems members can keep employer contributions without completing the usual vesting wait. This covers employer contributions made without requiring employee contributions in specified defined contribution plans. The member or lawful spouse must be a service member receiving permanent change-of-station or relocation orders outside Utah before vesting. The member must genuinely end employment with all participating employers and apply in writing. Once the retirement office confirms these conditions, all covered employer contributions belong to the member.

New retirement tradeoffs for Utah Guard officials

Beginning July 1, 2025, Utah’s adjutant general and other Guard personnel listed in law can request retirement coverage exemptions. Their employer must designate their job for exemption, and they must apply in writing to Utah Retirement Systems. For exempt Tier II defined contribution or hybrid members, employer contributions belong to them without the usual vesting wait. They earn no additional service credit while exempt, but can still contribute their own pay voluntarily.
