Beginning January 1, 2026, commercial wind and solar systems with capacity of at least 660 kilowatts need storage for production tax credits. Storage must hold at least six hours of expected peak daily generation and make the system’s power reliably available when needed. Systems with a transmission interconnection-queue position or signed transmission-provider agreement before January 1, 2025, are exempt from the storage requirement. Claimants need written certification from Utah’s Office of Energy Development. Also beginning January 1, 2026, stored electricity counts toward these credits only when sold from storage. That timing rule covers qualifying wind, geothermal electricity, biomass, and solar systems with capacity of at least 660 kilowatts.
