Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Broader residency exception for district attorney candidates

Beginning May 7, 2025, Utah expands a residency exception for candidates seeking election as district attorney. It covers appointed prosecutors who currently serve as either district attorney or county attorney. They must have moved into the prosecution district within 30 days after appointment and must still live there. This provides an alternative to the usual one-year residency requirement.

New paperwork for Utah legal office candidates

Beginning May 7, 2025, Utah county attorney, district attorney, and attorney general candidates must submit documents with their candidacy papers. They must provide one of three options: a Utah Supreme Court letter confirming good standing; proof of a Utah State Bar application plus a sworn statement about its status; or a sworn statement explaining how they will meet office requirements before taking office. Candidates who belong to a state bar association must also provide their license number.
