Addiction medication users gain protected treatment access

Beginning May 7, 2025, Utah requires rules protecting access to qualifying residential treatment programs and recovery residences. These rules bar rejection solely because a client uses medication-assisted treatment recommended by a licensed prescriber or provider. They also require these settings to allow that treatment. Protections cover licensed nonprofit recovery residences and licensed residential treatment programs that are nonprofit or receive government funding or grants. Medicaid provider contracts with these facilities must require compliance, with violations subject to sanctions.
