Vermont farms face strict paraquat limits
Beginning November 1, 2026, Vermont bans selling, using, or applying paraquat without a written state permit. The ban covers paraquat and all its salts, including paraquat dichloride and paraquat dimethyl sulfate. The Secretary of Agriculture, Food and Markets can issue permits only for fruit-producing tree orchards or listed berry and small-fruit crops. Those crops must be in USDA Crop Group 13-07. Permits last no more than three years and must end by December 31, 2030. Certified applicators must complete required federal and Vermont agriculture agency training within one year before receiving a permit. Permits must identify the product label name, allowed uses and crops, start date, duration, and geographic area. Applications are limited to tree or vine rows for necessary weed control. Permit conditions must follow federal drift-control measures and require label directions that minimize applicator exposure. The Secretary must report all state paraquat-use data, including amounts, dates, and locations, to legislative agriculture committees each year by December 15.
