Panton voters can recall elected town officers

The law approves Panton’s charter amendment and takes effect upon passage. Registered voters can seek to remove an elected town officer through a recall vote. A written petition needs signatures from at least 15% of registered voters, filed with the Selectboard and Town Clerk. Petitions filed 47–60 days before the next regular town meeting put the question on that meeting’s public notice. Otherwise, the Selectboard must hold a special meeting within 45 days after receiving the petition, using a secret ballot. Removal requires a majority of votes cast. Yes votes must also reach the smaller of two totals: votes received by the officer in their most recent winning election, or one-third of registered voters. A successful recall removes the officer, and the vacancy is filled as required by law. The same person cannot face a recall petition more than once within 12 months.
