Corrections workers gain limited retirement contribution bargaining

Beginning June 11, 2026, Washington requires bargaining over supplemental retirement contributions for represented Department of Corrections employees. The benefits, including medical plans, must be run by or for an employee organization representing those workers. Bargaining deadlocks over these contributions cannot be settled through interest arbitration, where an arbitrator decides contract terms. These contributions are separate from health care benefits under coalition bargaining rules. The law sets no contribution amount or guaranteed financial benefit.
