Beginning July 27, 2025, qualifying volunteer firefighters gain access to Washington’s state deferred compensation program. This covers volunteer firefighter participants defined in RCW 41.24.010(8)(a). They can defer part of their income for tax-deferred retirement savings, subject to existing federal contribution limits. Participation does not prevent them from also participating in public pension systems.
