Civil service option for district firefighters

Beginning July 27, 2025, a fire protection district with a fully‑paid fire department can adopt civil service by board resolution. When adopted, the department follows the same civil service rules used by cities and towns under state law. Employees cannot be fired just for living outside the district. This gives covered firefighters formal job protections and due process.

Ending district civil service needs employee vote

Beginning July 27, 2025, a district that already uses civil service can end it. The board of fire commissioners must pass a resolution to dissolve. Then a majority of the district’s civil service employees must vote to end it within 60 calendar days. If both steps happen, civil service protections for that department end.
