3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 2 costs, 1 mixed.
Registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and nurses with a multistate license pay an added amount in their fees to fund a central nursing resource center. All health care providers licensed under RCW 18.130.040 also pay extra to cover regulatory work for retired volunteer medical workers. These are add-on charges on top of basic licensing costs.
For many health professions, each license now includes up to $25 extra. The Department of Health transfers this amount to the University of Washington for the purposes in RCW 43.70.112, including support for the UW health sciences library. This applies to physicians, physician assistants, nurses, optometrists, mental health counselors, massage therapists, social workers, midwives, occupational therapists, dietitians, speech-language pathologists, acupuncturists, veterinarians, and veterinary technicians.
The Department of Health charges fees for health professional licenses and inspections. Fees cannot be higher than the department’s actual licensing and inspection costs. Physicians who live and practice in Washington with a retired active license do not pay these fees. Municipal corporations that provide emergency medical care and transport are exempt or may pay only their pro rata share. For nurses, the Secretary can set different fees and may waive fees when it protects public health or avoids a financial loss to the state.
