End-of-life directives stay valid during pregnancy

Beginning July 27, 2025, Washington’s model health care directive no longer says pregnancy makes the directive ineffective. Pregnant adults’ signed directives remain enforceable, including their choices about whether to receive artificially provided food and water. Existing medical requirements remain: the attending doctor must document a terminal condition, or two doctors must document permanent unconsciousness. Life-sustaining treatment must serve only to artificially prolong dying. The form also states that adults can change their directives before signing or at any time afterward. Changes must follow Washington law or federal constitutional law to be legally valid.
