Beginning July 27, 2025, Washington local governments can automatically enroll eligible new hires in their own deferred compensation retirement savings plans. Enrollment follows the local plan's rules, and employees can opt out. Employees covered by a local government's own plan are excluded from the state plan's automatic-enrollment requirement. Contributions build retirement savings but reduce take-home pay. The law sets no contribution rate for these local plans.
